AI agents for business: what they actually do (beyond the hype)

By Reckona AIUpdated 27 July 20268 min read

"AI agent" gets used for everything from a simple scripted chatbot to a system that independently completes multi-step tasks. The gap between the marketing term and what's actually deployable today is wide — here's an honest picture.

Agent vs chatbot: the real difference

ChatbotAgent
BehaviorFollows a scripted flow or answers from a knowledge baseTakes multi-step actions, can use tools, makes decisions within limits

Real use cases working today

What still needs a human

Complex negotiation, judgment calls with ambiguous data, and anything with real legal or financial consequence still needs a human in the loop — an agent that fails silently on an edge case is worse than one with no autonomy at all. Good agent design routes uncertainty to a person rather than guessing confidently.

Governance questions before deploying

The honest framing: agents extend what automation can do — from answering questions to taking actions — but they're not autonomous employees. They need the same access controls and oversight as any system touching customer data or money.
