GEO · MonitoringAI hallucinations about your brand: how to catch and fix them
Ask ChatGPT about your own company and you might hear a price you stopped charging two years ago, a product you discontinued, or a service you never offered. Unlike a bad Google snippet, an AI hallucination is stated with total confidence — and buyers believe it. Here's how to catch and fix it.
Why AI engines hallucinate about brands
AI engines synthesize an answer from whatever sources they can find — sometimes outdated pages, sometimes a competitor's claim about you, sometimes a plausible-sounding guess when data is thin. The less clear and current your entity is across the web, the more room the engine has to fill gaps incorrectly.
What to monitor
| Check monthly | What you're looking for |
|---|---|
| "What is [brand]?" | Correct category, correct description |
| "[Brand] pricing / cost" | Current, not stale, numbers |
| "[Brand] vs [competitor]" | Fair, accurate comparison — not a fabricated weakness |
| "Does [brand] offer X?" | No claims about services or products you don't actually provide |
The correction playbook
- Publish the correct fact clearly and prominently on your own site — the single highest-leverage fix, since it's the source engines re-crawl.
- Fix it everywhere else it's wrong. Directories, profiles, old press mentions — inconsistency is often the root cause.
- Add or update schema so the correct fact is machine-readable, not just human-readable.
- Re-check the panel next cycle. AI engines re-crawl and re-synthesize; corrections take weeks, not hours, to propagate.
You can't fix what you don't check. Most brands never look — they find out about a hallucination from a confused customer instead of a monitoring panel.
