GEO · PlaybookHow to get cited by ChatGPT (and Gemini, Perplexity): a 2026 checklist
When a buyer asks an AI engine a question, it answers with a synthesized paragraph that names two or three sources. Getting your brand into that shortlist — cited, recommended, and described correctly — is the single highest-leverage move in AI-era search. Here's the checklist we run for clients.
Why citations are the new prize
On a classic results page, being ranked #4 still earns clicks. In an AI answer, being the fourth-best source earns nothing — the engine quotes two or three and moves on. So the goal shifts from ranking to being retrieved and named. That depends far less on any single keyword and far more on how legible, quotable and corroborated your brand is across the web.
The six signals AI engines look for
| Signal | What it means | How to build it |
|---|---|---|
| Entity clarity | The engine knows who you are as a distinct thing | Consistent name, category and facts across your site, schema and the web |
| Quotable structure | Content shaped in clean, liftable chunks | Direct-answer paragraphs, definitions, short lists, clear headings |
| Citable data | Original facts worth quoting | Publish your own research, benchmarks, prices, methods |
| Corroboration | Other sources say the same thing about you | Directories, industry publications, reviews AI engines crawl |
| Freshness | Recently updated, dated content | Visible publish/update dates, periodic refreshes |
| Crawlability | The engine can actually read the page | Server-rendered content, no accidental AI-crawler blocks, schema |
The order to fix them
- Start with crawlability and entity clarity. If AI crawlers can't read you, or can't tell what you are, nothing else matters. Server-render key pages, add Organization and FAQ schema, and make your name, category and location consistent everywhere.
- Then make content quotable. Lead sections with a direct one-sentence answer, then support it. Engines lift clean sentences, not buried ones.
- Then publish citable data. One original benchmark or study in your category does more than ten generic blog posts — it gives engines a reason to name you specifically.
- Then earn corroboration. Get listed and quoted on the third-party sources AI engines already trust in your sector.
The one-line rule: write the sentence you'd want ChatGPT to quote about you — then make sure it's on your site, backed by data, and repeated by sources the engine trusts.
How to know it's working
You can't improve what you don't measure. Baseline a prompt panel: run 30–40 real buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and score whether you're mentioned, recommended and described accurately. Re-run it monthly. That's exactly what our GEO practice does, and the method behind our study of 50 Indian brands — where 34 were invisible.
