GEO · ChatGPTChatGPT SEO: what it is and how it actually works
"ChatGPT SEO" is the practice of optimizing so that when ChatGPT browses the web or draws on its training data to answer a question, your brand is the one it names. It's a different game from Google ranking, with its own rules.
Two ways ChatGPT surfaces your brand
| Mode | How it works | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Live browsing | ChatGPT searches the web in real time and cites sources | Current SEO signals, crawlability, freshness |
| Training-data recall | ChatGPT answers from what it learned during training, no live search | How widely and consistently you were discussed online as of the training cutoff |
These require different strategies: live-browsing visibility is closer to classic SEO (be findable, be quotable, be current), while training-data presence is slower to build and depends on sustained mentions across the web over time.
What actually improves ChatGPT SEO
- Entity clarity. ChatGPT needs to reliably distinguish your brand from similarly named ones — see entity SEO.
- Consistent facts everywhere. Contradictions between your site and third-party mentions create uncertainty the model resolves by hedging or guessing.
- Being discussed, not just discoverable. Reviews, forum mentions, press coverage and directory listings all feed training-data presence over time.
The tactical checklist for winning live citations specifically — schema, quotable structure, citable data — is in how to get cited by ChatGPT. This article is the "what and why"; that one is the "how."
