GEO · MeasurementHow to track your AI search ranking and visibility
There's no rank #1 in an AI answer — you're either mentioned or you're not, described accurately or not. Traditional rank trackers can't measure this at all. Here's the method that actually works.
Why rank trackers don't work here
A rank tracker checks your position on a results page for a fixed keyword. AI answers are generated fresh each time, synthesized from multiple sources, and phrased differently query to query — there's no stable "position" to track. You need a different measurement approach entirely.
The prompt-panel method
| Step | What it involves |
|---|---|
| 1. Build a query panel | 30–40 real questions your buyers would actually ask, covering your category and comparisons |
| 2. Run it across engines | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity — each has different training and browsing behavior |
| 3. Score each response | Mentioned? Recommended? Described accurately? Competitor comparison included? |
| 4. Track monthly | The same panel, re-run, to see share-of-voice move over time |
Free vs proper tracking
You can run this manually for free — open each engine, type your panel of questions, log the results in a spreadsheet. It works, but it's slow and inconsistent between sessions. A proper program automates the panel, standardizes scoring and benchmarks against named competitors, which is where a monthly GEO audit earns its keep.
Start free, upgrade when it matters. A manual quarterly check is enough to know if you have a problem. A monthly automated panel is what you need once AI visibility is a real revenue channel.
