GEO · DefinitionWhat is AI SEO? A plain-English explanation
"AI SEO" gets used two different ways — optimizing your site to be found by AI answer engines, and using AI tools to do traditional SEO work faster. Both matter, but they're not the same thing. Here's the difference, plainly.
The two meanings of "AI SEO"
| Meaning | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Optimizing for AI engines | Getting cited, recommended and described correctly inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews — what most people mean by "GEO" |
| Using AI to do SEO | AI-assisted keyword research, content drafting, technical audits — tools that speed up traditional SEO work |
Both are legitimate uses of the phrase. This article focuses on the first — because it's the one changing how visibility actually works, not just how fast you can produce it.
How AI SEO differs from traditional SEO
- The unit of success changes. Traditional SEO wins a ranking position; AI SEO wins a citation inside a synthesized answer.
- Different signals matter more. Entity clarity, quotable structure and cross-source corroboration outweigh backlink count in AI SEO.
- Measurement changes. You can't check AI SEO with a rank tracker — it needs a prompt panel run across multiple AI engines.
They're not competitors. Clean technical foundations, real expertise and structured content help both disciplines — AI SEO adds on top of good traditional SEO, it doesn't replace it.
