GEO for US businesses: how to get recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

By Reckona AIPublished 4 October 20264 min read

The United States is the most crowded AI-search market in the world: more brands, more English-language content and more competing answers for every query. Being merely accurate is not enough. Here is a step-by-step approach to becoming the brand ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity actually name.

Key takeaway: US businesses get recommended by AI assistants by making their entity unmistakable, earning reviews and mentions on the platforms US buyers and engines rely on, and publishing answer-first content for real buyer questions. Results can't be guaranteed, so measure monthly.

Why the US is the hardest market to win in AI answers

When a US buyer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, the engine has an enormous candidate pool to choose from. In most categories there are dozens of credible vendors, hundreds of listicles and thousands of reviews. That has two consequences. First, being present in the conversation requires clear, consistent signals about who you are. Second, being recommended usually depends on what third parties say about you, not only what your own site says.

No AI vendor publishes how it picks sources, so treat everything below as practical inference from how these systems behave, not a guarantee. The good news is that the actions that help are ordinary, durable marketing and technical hygiene.

Step 1: Make your entity unmistakable

AI engines try to resolve your company into one coherent entity. Give them the same facts everywhere:

If your brand name collides with other companies, add plain-language disambiguation near the top of your About page and in your structured data.

Step 2: Earn presence where US buyers and AI engines look

Third-party sources carry weight because they are independent. Which ones matter depends on your category:

If you sell...Platforms worth prioritising
B2B software or servicesG2, Capterra, Clutch, Gartner Peer Insights, industry analyst lists, LinkedIn, relevant subreddits and communities
Local servicesGoogle Business Profile, Yelp, Better Business Bureau, Angi and similar home-service marketplaces
Healthcare, legal, financialYour state licensing or regulator listings, specialist directories, and credentialed bylines
EcommerceMarketplace reviews, product-review sites, trade press and retailer listings

Aim for genuine reviews and mentions, not volume. US regulators have rules against fake reviews and undisclosed endorsements, and AI engines are increasingly cautious about low-quality sources.

Step 3: Publish content that answers real questions, without thin duplicates

US buyers ask long, specific questions: "best payroll software for a 50-person restaurant group in Texas." Build pages that answer the question directly in the first sentences, then support it with specifics. Resist the temptation to generate fifty near-identical state pages. Create location pages only where you genuinely operate or serve, and make each one substantively different (local regulations, local examples, local pricing context). Our complete GEO guide covers answer-first structure in depth.

Step 3b: Do not block the bots you want citations from

Check your robots.txt and firewall rules. Allow search and citation crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Many US companies decide separately whether to allow bulk AI-training crawlers. That is a business decision, and blocking training bots does not stop you being cited by search bots. An optional llms.txt file is low-cost hygiene, not a ranking lever.

Step 4: Measure from a US vantage point

Build a fixed panel of 20 to 40 realistic buyer prompts, run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and score each response: not mentioned, mentioned, or recommended and described accurately. Re-run monthly. Answers vary by location, account and phrasing, so track trends rather than single results. You can generate a starter panel with our free AI Rank Tracker, and our guide to tracking AI search visibility explains the method.

Realistic expectations. Nobody can guarantee a citation or a ranking inside an AI answer. A good GEO program improves the odds by fixing technical access, strengthening entity signals, building independent proof and publishing genuinely useful answers, then measuring the result every month.

Working with a remote GEO team from the US

Reckona AI is headquartered in Mumbai and serves US clients remotely, with scoped, fixed-price quotes in US dollars. Frequently asked questions

Do I need separate pages for every US state?

No. Create state or city pages only where you genuinely operate or serve customers, and make each one substantively different. Dozens of near-identical templated pages are treated as thin content by search engines and are unlikely to help AI visibility.

How long does GEO take to show results?

It varies by category and starting point. Technical fixes and entity clean-up can show up within weeks as engines re-crawl, while earning independent reviews and mentions typically takes several months. No one can promise a specific outcome.

Should US companies allow AI training crawlers?

That is a business decision. Blocking training bots such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot does not prevent search and citation bots from reading your site, so you can usually stay visible in AI answers while opting out of training.
