SEO · SchemaSchema markup: the SEO foundation most sites get wrong
Schema markup is one of the cheapest, highest-leverage technical SEO fixes available — and one of the most commonly implemented badly. Here's which types actually matter and the mistakes that quietly make them worthless.
What schema actually does
Schema (structured data, usually in JSON-LD format) doesn't directly boost rankings — it tells search engines and AI crawlers exactly what your content means, rather than making them guess from unstructured text. Correctly implemented, it earns rich results in Google and makes your facts easier for AI engines to lift and cite accurately.
The schema types that matter most
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Organization | Every site — establishes your entity's core facts |
| LocalBusiness | Physical locations — address, hours, service area |
| Product | Ecommerce — price, availability, reviews |
| FAQPage | Any page answering real questions — strong AI-citation candidate |
| Article / BlogPosting | Content pages — author, dates, headline |
| BreadcrumbList | Any multi-level site — clarifies site structure |
Common mistakes that make schema useless
- Schema that contradicts visible content. If the markup says one price and the page shows another, search engines may distrust or ignore it entirely.
- Copy-pasted schema never updated. Stale schema from a template is worse than no schema — it actively misleads crawlers.
- Over-marking everything. Applying Product schema to a blog post, or FAQ schema to content that isn't actually Q&A format, is spam in Google's eyes.
- Never validating it. A syntax error can silently invalidate an entire schema block — always test with a validator after implementing.
The AI-era bonus: accurate, current schema is one of the clearest signals AI engines use for entity clarity — see our entity SEO guide for how this feeds GEO directly.
