GEO · Technicalllms.txt and chunk-formatted content: a practical guide
llms.txt has become the new robots.txt for the AI era — a simple file pointing AI crawlers to your most important pages. It's not magic, and it won't fix bad content. But paired with retrieval-friendly formatting, it's a genuinely useful, low-effort addition to a GEO program.
What llms.txt actually does
It's a plain Markdown file at your site root listing your key pages with short descriptions — a curated map for AI crawlers, similar in spirit to a sitemap but written for a language model, not a search index. Support varies by engine and is evolving fast; think of it as a signal, not a guarantee of citation.
What it won't do
- It won't get you cited if your content isn't quotable or your entity isn't clear — see our checklist for getting cited by ChatGPT.
- It doesn't replace schema markup or crawlability fundamentals.
- It's not yet universally adopted or weighted the same way across every AI engine.
Chunk-formatted content: the part that matters more
AI engines retrieve and quote in chunks — a paragraph, a definition, a short list — not whole pages. Content structured for humans to skim is often accidentally well-structured for this too, but a few deliberate choices help:
| Do | Why |
|---|---|
| Lead each section with a direct-answer sentence | Gives the engine a clean, quotable unit |
| Use clear H2/H3 headings that state the question | Matches how retrieval systems match content to a query |
| Keep definitions and stats in short, standalone sentences | Easy to lift without surrounding context |
| Avoid burying the answer three paragraphs in | Engines favor content that answers early |
Practical order: fix crawlability and entity clarity first, structure your best content in retrieval-friendly chunks second, and add llms.txt as a final low-cost signal — not the other way around.
