SEO · LocalGoogle Business Profile optimization: the complete checklist
Your Google Business Profile is often the very first thing a local customer sees — before your website, before a review site. Most businesses claim it once and never touch it again. Here's the full checklist to actually optimize it.
The setup checklist
| Element | What to get right |
|---|---|
| Primary category | The single most important field — choose the most specific accurate category, not the broadest |
| Secondary categories | Add every genuinely relevant one — expands which searches you appear for |
| Business description | Clear, keyword-natural description of what you do and for whom |
| Hours & special hours | Keep current — wrong hours actively lose customers who show up at a closed door |
| Service area / address | Accurate to how customers actually find you |
The ongoing maintenance checklist
- Photos monthly. Real, current photos — Google favors profiles with recent visual activity.
- Posts weekly or biweekly. Offers, updates, events — signals an active, trustworthy business.
- Q&A monitored. Answer questions promptly, and seed the most common ones yourself before customers have to ask.
- Reviews requested and answered. See our review automation guide for a system that doesn't feel robotic.
Mistakes that quietly hurt visibility
- Duplicate listings for the same business (merge or remove them)
- Keyword-stuffing the business name field (against Google's guidelines, and it can trigger a suspension)
- Ignoring negative reviews instead of responding professionally
- Never updating photos, making the listing look abandoned
The compounding habit: a profile updated weekly, with fresh photos and answered reviews, consistently outranks a technically "complete" profile that's been untouched for a year.
