Performance · CROLanding page optimization checklist: what actually lifts conversion
Most landing page 'optimization' is cosmetic — a new button color, a reworded headline — while the structural issues that actually kill conversion go untouched. Here's the checklist in the order that matters.
Fix these before anything cosmetic
| Element | What kills conversion |
|---|---|
| Above-the-fold clarity | A visitor who can't tell what you offer in 5 seconds leaves — the single biggest lever |
| Form length | Every extra field measurably drops completion — ask only what you need for the first touch |
| Page speed | Slow load on mobile loses visitors before they see the offer — see our speed and conversion guide |
| Single, clear call to action | Competing CTAs split attention and reduce clicks on both |
Trust signals that actually move the needle
- Specific, verifiable proof — a real number or named result, not a vague claim
- Recognizable client logos or genuine testimonials, not stock quotes
- Clear next-step expectations ("we reply within 4 hours") that reduce the risk of asking
What to test, in order
- Headline and above-the-fold offer — the highest-leverage test by far.
- Form length and fields — fewer fields almost always wins, but test what you actually need.
- CTA copy and placement — specific ("Get my free audit") usually beats generic ("Submit").
- Social proof placement — near the CTA, not buried at the bottom.
Don't test five things at once. Change one structural element, measure for a real sample size, then move to the next — simultaneous changes make it impossible to know what actually worked.
