Web · CROWebsite speed and conversion in India: what the data actually shows
Global page-speed benchmarks assume flagship phones and fast wifi. Most Indian traffic is mid-range Android on 4G. That gap means sites that pass speed tests on a developer's laptop can still be slow — and losing conversions — for the majority of real visitors.
Why the Indian context is different
A site that loads in 1.5 seconds on office wifi can take 5-6 seconds on a ₹12,000 Android phone over patchy 4G. Every additional second of load time measurably increases bounce, and the effect is sharper on mobile than desktop. If your analytics show high mobile traffic and low mobile conversion, speed is the first thing to check.
The fixes that move conversion fastest
| Fix | Typical impact |
|---|---|
| Compress and lazy-load images | Often the single biggest win — images dominate page weight |
| Remove autoplay video where not essential | Cuts initial load significantly on mobile/metered connections |
| Minimize third-party scripts | Every tracking pixel and widget adds latency |
| Server-side render key content | Faster first paint than client-rendered JS-heavy pages |
Beyond raw speed: perceived speed
A page that shows content progressively — text first, images as they load — feels faster than one that shows nothing until everything is ready, even at the same total load time. Design for perceived speed, not just the Lighthouse score.
Test on a real device, not just a lab tool. Throttle to 4G on a mid-range Android and actually watch your site load. Lab scores can look green while the real experience is still slow.
Where this connects to SEO and GEO
Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor, and slow, JS-heavy pages are also harder for AI crawlers to read reliably — the same fixes that improve conversion also improve SEO and GEO. See our Web practice for migrations and speed fixes to Core Web Vitals green.
