WhatsApp bot vs website chatbot: which should you build first?

By Reckona AIUpdated 24 July 20267 min read

Both automate conversations. Both use similar AI underneath. But for most Indian businesses, one has a far better first-year return than the other — and it's not always the one companies default to. Here's how to decide.

The core difference: where your customers already are

A website chatbot only works if someone is already on your site. A WhatsApp bot reaches customers wherever they are — the app already on their phone, the number they already have saved, no visit required. For most Indian SMEs and mid-market companies, that difference decides which channel to build first.

When to build both

They're not exclusive — a website chatbot captures on-site intent while a WhatsApp flow carries the relationship after that first visit (reminders, order status, re-engagement). Most companies get the highest return starting with WhatsApp, then adding a website bot once traffic volume justifies it.

Rule of thumb: if most of your enquiries already arrive by phone call or WhatsApp message, start there. If most arrive through organic site traffic with a clear buying intent, start with the site.
