Website accessibility (WCAG 2.2) for Indian businesses

By Reckona AIUpdated 28 July 20267 min read

Accessibility gets treated as a nice-to-have or a large enterprise's problem. It's neither — a meaningful share of any audience has some access need, and fixing the basics is often cheap, with SEO benefits as a genuine side effect.

What WCAG 2.2 actually requires, practically

RequirementWhat it means in practice
Sufficient color contrastText readable against its background — also just better UX for everyone
Keyboard navigabilityEvery interactive element usable without a mouse
Alt text on imagesScreen readers can describe images — and this doubles as an SEO signal
Clear focus indicatorsVisible indication of where keyboard focus currently is
Descriptive link text"Read more" tells a screen reader nothing; "Read our GEO guide" does

The SEO overlap

Alt text, semantic heading structure, clear link text and fast load times are accessibility requirements and SEO best practices at the same time — the two disciplines share more foundation than most teams realize. Fixing accessibility often improves crawlability and rankings as a direct side effect.

Where to start with limited budget

  1. Run an automated audit (many free tools exist) to catch the obvious violations first.
  2. Fix color contrast and alt text — usually the highest-impact, lowest-effort fixes.
  3. Test keyboard navigation manually on your key conversion paths — forms, checkout, contact.
  4. Add accessibility checks to your ongoing content process, not just a one-time cleanup.

The business case beyond compliance: a more accessible site is generally a clearer, faster, better-structured site for every visitor — the fixes rarely benefit only the audience they were made for.
