Internal linking strategy: the free SEO lever most sites ignore

By Reckona AIUpdated 27 July 20267 min read

Backlinks take months of outreach to earn. Internal links are entirely within your control, cost nothing, and most sites still get them wrong — either scattered randomly or missing almost entirely. Here's how to structure them properly.

What internal linking actually does

The structure that works: hub and spoke

A strong pillar page (like a complete guide) links out to detailed spoke articles on specific subtopics, and every spoke links back to the pillar and sideways to related spokes. This is exactly the structure behind our own GEO pillar guide and its supporting articles — concentrated authority on the pillar, discoverability for every spoke.

DoAvoid
Link using descriptive anchor text ("the GEO pillar guide")Generic anchor text ("click here", "read more")
Link from high-traffic pages to pages you want to rankLinking only between already-strong pages
Keep every page 2–3 clicks from the homepageBurying content ten clicks deep with no path to it
Update old posts to link to new relevant onesTreating internal linking as a one-time task

Why this matters more in the AI era

AI engines that crawl and retrieve content use link structure to understand what's related and authoritative on a site, much like search engines always have. A well-linked cluster of content on a topic is more likely to be retrieved coherently than isolated, disconnected pages — reinforcing the same entity clarity that GEO depends on.

The audit that takes an afternoon: list your 10 highest-value pages, then check whether your other content actually links to them. Most sites find several with almost no internal links pointing in.
