SEO · Regional LanguageHindi and regional-language SEO: the opportunity most Indian brands ignore
Most Indian business websites are built and optimized exclusively in English — while a large and fast-growing share of India's internet users search primarily in Hindi and other regional languages. That's demand sitting almost entirely uncontested.
The scale of the gap
India has hundreds of millions of internet users who are more comfortable searching in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and other regional languages than in English — and regional-language internet usage keeps growing faster than English usage. Most competitors haven't touched this. An English-only SEO strategy is invisible to that entire segment by default.
Why simple translation doesn't work
- Search intent differs by language, not just vocabulary. A literal translation of an English keyword often isn't how people actually phrase the search in Hindi.
- Machine-translated content reads as untrustworthy. Both users and E-E-A-T signals suffer when content is obviously auto-translated rather than written for the audience.
- Local dialects and code-switching matter. Real regional search queries often mix English and the local language — pure formal Hindi content misses how people actually type.
Where to start
| Step | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Keyword research in-language | Native speakers researching actual regional search phrasing, not translated English keywords |
| hreflang implementation | Correct technical signals so Google serves the right language version to the right searcher |
| Native content, not translation | Written for the language, not converted from an English draft |
| Regional Google Business Profile | Local listings in-language for location-based businesses |
Start with your highest-intent pages, not the whole site. A regional-language version of your top 10 converting pages captures most of the opportunity without a full-site relaunch.
