SEO · FundamentalsHow to do keyword research: a practical guide for Indian businesses
Keyword research done well is the foundation everything else in SEO builds on — done poorly, it sends you chasing traffic that never converts. Here's a practical process, not just a tool list.
The process, step by step
- List what customers actually call your product/service — not your internal jargon. Ask your sales team what prospects actually say.
- Expand with a keyword tool — Google Keyword Planner (free, needs an Ads account), Google Search Console (your own actual query data, the most underused source), or paid tools like Ahrefs/SEMrush for competitive gaps.
- Check search intent per keyword — is the searcher looking to buy, compare, or just learn? Google the term yourself and see what's already ranking.
- Prioritize by intent × difficulty, not volume alone — a lower-volume, high-intent term often converts better than a high-volume, vague one.
Reading search intent correctly
| Intent type | Example | Content that wins |
|---|---|---|
| Informational | "what is GST e-invoicing" | Educational guide, not a sales page |
| Commercial investigation | "best CRM software India" | Comparison content |
| Transactional | "SEO agency Mumbai pricing" | Service page with clear next step |
Don't skip Hinglish and regional phrasing
A meaningful share of Indian search volume mixes English and Hindi, or happens in regional languages entirely — "dukan ke liye website," "gym marketing kaise kare." Tools built for global markets often undercount this volume. Search Console's actual query data and manual research (autocomplete, "People also ask") catch what keyword tools miss for the Indian market — see our Hindi and regional language SEO guide for the fuller picture.
Your own Search Console is free and underused. It shows the exact queries already bringing you traffic and impressions — often the fastest way to find quick-win keywords you're already ranking for on page two.
