Automation · BPABusiness process automation in India: what's actually worth automating
Business process automation (BPA) predates the current AI wave by decades — but AI has made it dramatically more capable. Here's what's genuinely worth automating in an Indian company today, and what still needs a human.
BPA vs AI automation: not quite the same thing
| Traditional BPA / RPA | AI-powered automation | |
|---|---|---|
| Handles | Rigid, rule-based, repetitive steps | Judgment-adjacent tasks with variation — reading, extracting, drafting |
| Breaks when | Input format changes even slightly | More resilient to variation, but not infallible |
| Example | Copying data between two systems on a schedule | Reading a scanned invoice and extracting the right fields regardless of layout |
See our fuller breakdown in RPA vs AI automation for exactly where the line sits.
What's actually worth automating first
- Document generation — certificates, quotes, invoices from structured data.
- Data entry between systems — the classic BPA win, still valuable.
- Report compilation — daily/weekly reports assembled from existing data sources.
- Approval workflows — routing requests through the right people automatically.
Common pitfalls in Indian implementations
- Automating a broken process. If the underlying process is inconsistent, automation just breaks faster and more often.
- No exception handling. A workflow that fails silently on edge cases erodes trust quickly.
- Underestimating change management. Staff need to trust and adopt the new workflow, not route around it.
Sequencing rule: automate the highest volume × error-cost process first — see the full method in the ₹40-lakh spreadsheet.
