What Is an AI Citation? Definition and How Citations Work
Definition: An AI citation is a link or attribution shown alongside an AI-generated answer, pointing to the page the system used to support a claim.
How it works
Citation behaviour varies. Some systems, such as Perplexity, are built around dense citations; Google's AI Overviews show expandable source links; and some conversational answers carry no citation at all when they draw on the model's trained knowledge without a live search. Exactly which retrieved sources get the visible citation slot is not published by any vendor.
Citation, mention and recommendation are different
A citation is a link to a source. A brand mention is the brand being named, with or without a link. An AI recommendation is the brand being suggested as a good option. They are distinct outcomes and should be tracked separately.
Why it matters
Being cited gives readers a path to your site and signals that the system judged your page a credible source for the question.
What to do next
Make pages quotable with a direct answer near the top, keep facts consistent, publish original data worth citing and earn independent mentions. See the checklist for getting cited by ChatGPT.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI citation the same as being recommended?
No. A citation links to a source that supports a claim, while a recommendation names a brand as a suggestion. A brand can be cited without being recommended and recommended without being linked.
How do I get cited by AI search engines?
Make sure crawlers can read your pages, keep your entity details consistent, lead with direct, quotable answers, publish original data, and earn mentions on sources AI engines already rely on. No one can guarantee a citation.
