What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? Definition & Guide
Definition: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand more likely to be found, understood and cited by AI systems that generate answers, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
How it works
GEO is a bundle of practices rather than a single algorithm to game. It combines technical access (can AI crawlers read your pages), entity clarity (does the system know who you are), answer-shaped content, structured data and independent corroboration from third-party sources. No AI vendor publishes how it selects sources, so GEO is built on observed behaviour and testing, and results are not guaranteed.
How it differs from SEO
SEO aims to win a position on a results page that a person clicks. GEO aims to be named and described accurately inside the answer itself. The two share most of their technical foundation, and strong SEO is the base for GEO. See GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
Why it matters
Buyers increasingly ask an AI assistant for a shortlist before they open a website. If the answer names your competitors and not you, there is no second page for the buyer to scroll to.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap heavily. SEO focuses on ranking in results pages; GEO focuses on being cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers. Clean technical SEO is the foundation for both.
Can GEO guarantee that ChatGPT will mention my brand?
No. AI vendors do not publish how they select sources, so no one can guarantee a citation. GEO improves the odds through access, entity clarity, quotable content and independent proof, and you measure the result.
