What are backlinks and why do they matter for SEO?

By Reckona AIUpdated 28 July 20267 min read

A backlink is simply another website linking to yours. Simple concept, but it remains one of the strongest trust signals search engines use — and one of the most misunderstood by businesses trying to buy their way to rankings.

Why backlinks matter

Search engines treat a link from another site as a vote of confidence — the more relevant and authoritative sites that link to you, the more search engines trust that your content is worth showing. It's not the only ranking factor, but it remains one of the harder ones to fake convincingly, which is exactly why it still carries weight.

Good links vs harmful links

Good backlinkHarmful backlink
From a relevant, real site in your industryFrom link farms or clearly low-quality, unrelated sites
Earned through genuine coverage, guest content or mentionsBought in bulk from marketplaces
Editorially placed, not part of a link schemeExcessive reciprocal linking or link exchanges

Buying links in bulk is against Google's guidelines and risks a manual penalty — the short-term ranking boost isn't worth the risk of a site-wide demotion.

How Indian businesses earn links legitimately

Domain Authority isn't a Google metric. DA/PA are third-party estimates (from tools like Moz/Ahrefs), not something Google itself uses — see our DA/PA explained guide for what actually matters instead.
