GEO · ChecklistThe AI visibility checklist: 30 things to check on your website
Use this as a self-audit. Answer each item yes or no, fix the nos in order and re-test real buyer questions in the assistants afterwards.
Key takeaway: Most AI-visibility problems fall into six groups: crawlers cannot reach you, content does not answer questions, structure is missing, business facts are inconsistent, there is no independent proof, or nobody is measuring. Work through the checklist in order; the early groups often unlock the rest. Nothing here guarantees a citation.
A. Access (can assistants reach you?)
- robots.txt does not block search or user-fetch AI crawlers by accident. Guide.
- Your CDN or firewall does not block AI crawlers.
- Key pages return HTTP 200 and are not behind a login.
- Main content is present in the HTML, not only rendered by JavaScript.
- An XML sitemap exists, is current and is submitted.
B. Content (do pages answer questions?)
- Each service has its own page.
- Pages open with a direct answer. Guide.
- Headings match how buyers phrase questions.
- Pricing or how pricing is set is stated plainly.
- Pages say who a service is for and who it is not for.
- An FAQ answers real follow-up questions in full.
C. Structure (is it machine-readable?)
- Organisation schema with name, URL, logo and profiles.
- LocalBusiness or Service schema where relevant.
- FAQ and breadcrumb schema that match visible content.
- Valid markup with no errors in a testing tool.
- Clear internal links between related pages.
D. Entity (are the facts consistent?)
- Business name is written the same way everywhere.
- Address, phone and hours match across site and profiles.
- Google Business Profile is complete and current.
- An About page states who you are, where you work and who runs the business.
- Services and categories are described consistently. Guide.
E. Proof (does anyone else say it?)
- Genuine reviews on the platforms your buyers use.
- Listings in relevant industry or professional directories.
- Press, partner or customer mentions you can link to.
- Original data, research or case material others can cite.
- No fake or incentivised reviews.
F. Measurement (do you know where you stand?)
- A panel of 20 to 40 real buyer questions exists. Guide.
- You have a baseline from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google.
- Answers are checked for accuracy, not just mentions.
- The panel is re-run on a schedule and changes are logged.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I start on the checklist?
Start with access. If crawlers cannot reach your content, nothing else matters. Then content, structure, entity facts, proof and measurement.
How long does it take to fix these items?
Technical and structural items can often be fixed in days or weeks. Building independent proof such as reviews and mentions usually takes months.
Will completing the checklist guarantee AI recommendations?
No. It removes common blockers and improves the odds, but AI vendors do not publish how they select sources.
Can I do this myself?
Many items are straightforward for a small team. An agency helps most with the technical audit, structured data, content at scale and ongoing measurement.
