SEO · EcommerceEcommerce SEO for your own online store (not marketplaces)
Ranking your own Shopify or headless store is a different game from winning Amazon or Flipkart search — see our marketplace SEO guide for that side. On your own domain, Google's full ranking system applies, and most stores leave real traffic on the table through fixable technical issues.
Product page structure that ranks
| Element | What to get right |
|---|---|
| Unique product descriptions | Manufacturer copy-paste creates duplicate content across the web — write original descriptions |
| Structured data (Product schema) | Enables rich results — price, availability, reviews shown directly in search |
| Image alt text | Descriptive, not generic — also feeds image search traffic |
| Reviews on-page | Fresh, indexable content that also builds trust and can enable review star ratings in search |
Category architecture
Category pages, not just product pages, are where broader commercial searches land — "running shoes for men" ranks a category page, not one specific product. A shallow or missing category structure means losing that entire layer of search intent to competitors with better-organized catalogs.
The technical issues that quietly cap ecommerce rankings
- Out-of-stock handling. Deleting out-of-stock product pages loses their accumulated SEO value — keep the page live with clear messaging and alternatives instead.
- Faceted navigation duplicate content. Filter combinations (size × color × price) can generate thousands of near-duplicate indexable URLs if not managed with canonical tags.
- Slow page speed at scale. Product image weight compounds fast across large catalogs — see our speed and conversion guide.
Category pages compound; product pages don't (as much). A well-optimized category page keeps earning traffic as products rotate in and out — individual product SEO effort is often better spent on your best sellers only.
